Title:   Costumer

 Hours:   29 hours per week, 12 months per year; typically Monday-Friday, but some Saturdays and evenings required

 Rate:     $14 per hour

 Report to:     Costume Shop Manager

 General Duties: 

  • Facilitate customers’ use of the costume collection, including rentals, maintenance, cleaning, and organization
  • Offer excellent customer service to new and returning customers
  • Supervise volunteers, collaborating with Costume Shop Manager on projects to be done

Specific Duties:

  • Provide friendly customer service to everyone who comes in the shop
  • Work with customers to find what they are looking for and provide the best items available within the collection to meet their needs
  • See that costumes are fit, altered, adapted, and constructed as needed
  • Help facilitate cleaning, laundering, mending, and put-away of costumes when returned
  • Research shows, time periods, etc., as needed, to meet customer expectations when they come in for an appointment
  • Assist in supervision and training of volunteers in costuming, sewing and put-away
  • Contribute to the Collection's social media platforms
  • Perform tasks as delegated by the Costume Shop Manager to maintain efficient and productive shop operations
  • Assist in fully costuming the annual SBCSC Summerfly production, shop responsibilities include:
  • Working with show’s director to assess shared vision, needs, and timeline of expectations
  • Determining costumes needed for each cast member and obtaining costume measurements
  • Preparing and organizing ALL costumes for show by pulling, altering, and creating pieces, as needed
  • Arranging for delivery of all costumes to venue by Monday of tech week
  • Having staff on-site to organize costumes and working with crew to distribute to cast members
  • Performing any repairs/alterations necessary during and following each performance
  • Collecting all costumes during strike (immediately after last performance) and marking for return
  • Arranging for pick-up of costumes for return to shop

 Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of costuming and fashion history
  • Strong tailoring skills including hand and machine sewing; patterning/cutting; fitting and alterations; dyeing, painting fabric, and distressing

  • Ability to multi-task in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment and to meet deadlines

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a related area, i.e. Theatrical Costuming, Fashion History, or training in costuming and sewing or equivalent experience with recommendations is required
  • Hold a valid driver’s license with no serious violations
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986
  • Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education
  • Provide a sworn statement that there have not been any convictions of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense
