POSITION TITLE: Middle School Music/Band/Orchestra Director

POSITION SUMMARY:   

Selected candidates will work hard to nurture the mind, body, and spirit of each child in their classroom. Provide curriculum and strong instruction to students in the area in which they are hired.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Oversees and coordinates all band/orchestra equipment including rentals, inventory, setup and teardown, and transportation of equipment. Directs and manages the overall program of instrumental music for the middle school. Provides students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensures compliance with all state requirements. Plans activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:    Principal   

GENERAL DUTIES:  

Provide classroom instruction that is engaging, integrated, and developmentally appropriate

Provide differentiated instruction to support varying levels of performance

Use formative assessment to guide instruction

Provide supervision of students at all times

Work collaboratively with other teachers and staff to provide academic support for students

Develop and maintain strong relationships and communication with parents

Fully participate in meetings, group planning, professional development, and other staff activities

All other duties of a classroom teacher

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Directs middle school instrumental performances, concert band, jazz band, soloists, and ensembles.
  2. Establishes performance requirements, enforces academic requirements, and verifies each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
  3. Coordinates activities with special groups.
  4. Provides for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, parades, and community events.
  5. Organizes and implements band trips in accordance with set policy and regulations as well as student interest and ability. Arranges transportation when needed.
  6. Complies with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules.
  7. Organizes and conducts tryouts for the unique band; informs administration and participants of final selections.
  8. Plans, rehearses, and directs musical experiences for the school and community with a minimum of three evening performances per school year.
  9. Cooperates with the school administration in providing music programs for school productions, and, as appropriate, civic functions that enhance the students’ performing experience.
  10. Oversees scheduling and other arrangements for the rehearsals and concerts in cooperation with the building principal.
  11. Maintains an accurate inventory of school-owned instruments. Controls the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  12. Submits budget needs annually to the principal in accordance with established timelines and guidelines.
  13. Orders all supplies and materials necessary for band-related activities in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations.
  14. Develops and implements plans for the instrumental music program and shows written evidence of preparation as required.
  15. Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  16. Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  17. Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  18. Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:   

Candidates should possess a strong background and credentials in Concert and Marching Band and hold a valid Indiana Department of Education teaching license.
