JOB TITLE:                 Carpenter

SALARY:                     $25.45/hr.

DEPARTMENT:           Facilities Management

REPORTS TO:           Assistant Director, Capital Projects

JOB SUMMARY:

Repairs, constructs, troubleshoots, purchases and installs carpentry needs for the school operations so that facilities and equipment are utilized at optimum levels at all times.

PRINCIPAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK:

Types of Activities Performed Frequently:   

Construction of all types of structures according to All Applicable Building Codes and School House Planning.  Repair and maintain educational facilities and equipment therein.  Responsible for Corporation’s tools and vehicles assigned.

Types of Activities Performed Occasionally: 

Planning, developing, estimating carpentry projects, working with school supervisors and administrators, recommending carpentry supplies and tools, attending professional meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required experience or training:  Must be high school graduate or equivalent, two years experience in building maintenance, possess basic computer skills, able to lift 60 pounds, and hold a valid operator’s license.

Desired experience or training:  Four (4) years of apprenticeship schooling or equal.  Two (2) years of actual experience in the carpentry trade.  Post-secondary training related to carpentry trade.

Special requirements:  A practical knowledge of all aspects of the carpentry trades methods and practices as they apply to school facilities.  Ability to estimate and control maintenance costs and to stimulate cooperation among fellow employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Mental Demands:  During the course of standard work, must be able to apply and comply with various regulatory requirements including Building Codes, Occupational Safety and Health standards, Environmental Projection requirements, and local health and sanitation standards.

Physical Demands:  Must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions including:  off ladders, in confined and cramped spaces, on building roofs, and in basements.  Must be able to lift a 60 pound weight, without assistance.

Environmental Conditions:  Mostly inside work and in a controlled environment.  On occasion may be exposed to extreme weather conditions if repairs are required on components located outside of Corporation buildings.

Works in standard office and school building environments.  Must be able to work regularly scheduled hours.  Must be able to handle stress.
